Brooke Shields gives Lea DeLaria a kiss at GLAAD awards
by John Graves
Actress Brooke Shields had the audience cheering when she locked lips with lesbian comedian Lea DeLaria at a New York awards ceremony.
Shields jokingly complained at the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation's 11th annual Media Awards on April 2 that her show Suddenly Susan lost out to Will & Grace. She exclaimed, "What do I have to do to get an award around here?"
At that point the irrepressible DeLaria jumped in, grabbed Shields' breast and planted a big kiss on her. Shields wrapped a leg around the 5-foot-2 inch DeLaria, and the two fell to the stage tangled in Sheilds' gown.
According to Us magazine, which ran a two-page spread on the awards, the planned kiss was supposed to be between Shields and her co-star Kathy Griffin. When Griffin canceled at the last minute, Shields was offered a chance to drop the kiss but refused. Shields said, "I was like, 'You can't... it's going to be the best visual ever'."
Actors Chris Meloni and Lee Tergesen, who played lovers on the HBO prison drama Oz, kissed not once, but three times during the award show.
The film Boys Don't Cry was honored, and special awards went to gay rock star Elton John and actress Marlo Thomas.
John accepted the Vito Russo Entertainer Award from Judy Shepard, mother of slain student Matthew Shepard. Russo, a film historian and author of The Celluloid Closet, was a founder of GLAAD.
Awards also went to ABC's 20/20 for a segment on gay former major league baseball player Andy Bean, and to MTV for an advertising campaign with a man reflecting wistfully about his male ex-lover.
The group will give other awards at cerenmonies in Los Angeles on April 15, in Washington, D.C., on May 13; and in San Francisco on June 3.
set to air on CBS. The cast of the show, based on director Tony Vitale's 1997 feature of the same name, includes Jessica Lundy of the series Hope & Gloria, Alec Mapa, Josette DiCarlo and Michael DeLuise.
The sitcom is being developed for CBS by Paramount Network Television, those same folks who want to bring you the homophobic "Dr. Laura."
According to Adalian, producers Jonathan Axelrod and Jamie Widdoes say that, although the story is based on the relationship between a gay man and his straight roommate, the show won't revolve around the sexual orientation of its characters.
Who would have guessed?
One of the teenage girls on MTV's new "teensploitaiton" sitcom Jailbait has a gay father who, you guessed it, is addicted to singing show tunes.
The show is set to debut on Sunday, April 16 at 9 pm.
Two kisses on 'Talk to Me'
Actress Kyra Sedgwick will lock lips with supermodel Paulina Porizkova not once, but twice, on her new ABC sitcom Talk to Me.
Sedgwick plays Janey, a New York Howard Stern-like radio talk show host who just loves to trade barbs with an advice maven modeled after "Dr. Laura," whose show follows hers.
The kiss comes on next week's (April 18) second episode, when two guys at a party with Janey dare her to flirt with a gorgeous woman she sees across the room (Porizkova).
After the kiss, Us magazine says Janey "describes the appeal of lesbianism in terms that we can't possibly print," even though she says them on network TV.
'Once you've kissed somebody'
Talking about her kiss with Calista Flockhart on Ally McBeal, actress Lucy Liu told Detour magazine, "Once you've kissed somebody, I think there's always that con-

The ex-husband of the hospital director on CBS' new inner-city hospital drama City of Angels came out to her as gay and living with HIV a few weeks ago and recommended she be tested.
The director was negative but she was still angry at her ex for concealing the fact that he knew he was gay when they got married. The ex-wife's attitude softened, though, when he told her he had been rejected every time he had tried to be open about his sexual orientation, and how he had even been thrown out on the street by his own family.
Paris Barclay, the openly gay AfricanAmerican director of City of Angels, complained of the lack of people of color in major LGBT roles when he was interviewed by Leeza Gibbons recently. The interview was part of a show on the portrayal of LGBT people in movies and TV that Gibbons did for cable's Lifetime channel.
It is uncertain yet as to whether or not the gay ex-husband of the hospital director will be a recurring role on the show, but if Paris Barclay has anything to say about it, he will. Jason Bateman to star in 'Guido'
Variety's Josef Adalian reports actor Jason Bateman, best known for his teen roles in Silver Spoons and The Hogan Family, will portray a gay man living with an ItalianAmerican stud in the pilot for the television version of the comedy film Kiss Me Guido,

Garth Brooks to sing at Equality show
Thanks to Entertainment Weekly for featuring a report on how gay, lesbian and straight stars will share the stage at the Equality Rocks concert to be held in conjunction with the upcoming Millenium March on Washington for LGBT April 29 and 30.
Country star Garth Brooks will sing a duet with gay British pop star George Michael. Brooks revealed the fact his sister is a lesbian in 1992 after he released "We Shall Be Free," a single that many people interpreted as including gay relationships.
Responding to a suggestion that the uninvited "Dr. Laura" might show up anyway as a "highly flammable effigy", Human Rights Campaign director Elizabeth Birch acknowledged it was possible and quipped, "We're a pretty gentle people. So it'll probably be something more creative, like putting her in a bad dress or something."
'I'm not doing it for men'
Actress Bijou Phillips, costar of the just released film Black and White, talked to Howard Stern about her same-sex experiences when the infamous shock jock questioned her about tabloid rumors about her on his show recently.
Phillips at one time told Details magazine that she was dating a woman, and that when she began seeing her she called all her friends

Phillips refused to label herself as lesbian or bisexual on Stern's show because she said she was still finding out about her sexuality.

Tyson talks his way out
Actor Robert Downey Jr., who plays a gay man in Black and White, got a surprise during an improvised scene where he makes a pass at boxer Mike Tyson.
The surprised boxer, who did not know of the setup, responded by grabbing Downey by the throat. Tyson told reporters later, “I'm not homophobic. I was just going with the flow. Robert just kept saying, 'Don't hit me hard, don't punch me, don't hit me hard"." Tyson went on, "I did kind of, a little. Just a little."
I wonder why?
Have you noticed that most of the reviews of Gerald Clarke's new biography, Get
Latin singing star and heartthrob Ricky Martin squirmed a bit when Barbara Walters questioned him about rumors and tabloid stories that he is gay on her pre-Oscar special this year.
When Walters suggested he could put an end to the rumors by denying he was gay like so many other actors have done, Martin sort of refused in a rambling, confusing response that left more questions than it answered.
Had he been on Howard Stern's show, the entire staff of the show would have responded, "That means yes!"
